La Basilica de la Sagrada Familia explained

What is the Sagrada Familia tour?

To visit the Sagrada Família Barcelona is to discover the exterior and interior of the unfinished work of the architect Antoni Gaudí, who devoted all his efforts to it, without respite, until his death in 1926. The crypt and the facade of the Nativity were declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2005. The basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI on November 7, 2010.

  • Sagrada Família 2022

What are the main dates in the history of the Sagrada Familia?

The great adventure of the Sagrada Família began in 1882. Two men were at the origin of it: Josep María Bocabella y Verdaguer and Antoni Gaudí. All the dates in its history: from the laying of the first stone to the laying of the Star of Mary at the end of 2021. A twelve-pointed star that lights up every night from 6 to 10 pm. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família in Catalan (in English: "Temple of the Holy Family") should be completed in 2026.

    Sagrada Familia History

  • Antoni Gaudi in 1878

Who is the creator of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia?

You already know. It was the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí. At the age of 31, he became the inventor of a church that was disproportionate for its time, with five naves, three facades, and eighteen towers. Above all, he is the man who defined a new religious architecture called naturalist-modernist. Symbolic creativity never equaled to this day.

    Gaudí Sagrada Familia

  • What to visit inside the Sagrada Familia?

With your entrance ticket, you will discover the Sagrada Familia Inside, a magical place that seems to be shrouded in a divine aura. Height, width, light. Everything is designed to impress. The magic of the stained glass windows, the apse, the altar, and the crypt is discovered with contemplation. Finally, the museum helps to understand Gaudí's creative process and his construction techniques. An unforgettable visit.

    Sagrada Familia Inside

  • What to visit outside the Sagrada Familia?

The facades and towers can be seen from the outside of the basilica. However, to go up to the Passion Tower or the Nativity Tower, you need to buy the "fast entrance + towers" ticket. With its three facades and eighteen towers, the exterior of the Sagrada Família is out of the ordinary in terms of its size and creative genius. Several generations of architects have succeeded one another in bringing Gaudí's work to life while respecting his initial plans. The visitor is simply stunned by this monument to the Glory of God. Height, richness of the facades, virtuosity of the sculptures. One can spend hours studying its symbolism or simply admire the technical prowess of its construction.

  • Sagrada Familia 2022

When will Sagrada Familia be finished?

Theoretically, the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia will be finished in 2026, the expected date of completion of the most important works and the centenary of the death of its creator Antoni Gaudí. But the history of the work is marked by many delays. The latest was the Covid-19 pandemic, which did not facilitate the end of construction begun in 1882.

Plan your visit

What is the best time to visit Sagrada Família?

The best time to visit the Sagrada Família is in the morning when it opens at 9 am. The Basilica is the most visited monument in Spain, far ahead of two other "temples" of Barcelona: Camp Nou and Park Güell. It is advisable to buy your ticket in advance to avoid wasting time at the entrance. Once inside, the visit is always fluid due to the limited number of visitors.

  • What are the Sagrada Familia's opening hours?

    • On 25 and 26 December, 1 and 6 January, the opening hours are from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

How long does it take to visit the Sagrada Familia?

It takes about 2 hours to visit Sagrada Família including the towers, the museum - located next to the crypt - and the store. Please note that once inside the basilica, you can stay as long as you like!

    Sagrada Familia Mass

The Sagrada Familia celebrates a mass every Sunday morning at 9 am. It is an international mass because the service, which lasts one hour, is held in several languages.

Sagrada Família Covid-19

The Sagrada Família did not miraculously escape the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike the Park Güell, which is in the open air, the Basilica had to close its doors for some time.

Today, the following sanitary rules must be respected when visiting the Sagrada Família and the Gaudí Museum:

  • Visitors must keep a safe distance of 2 meters if they are not from the same family.
  • Visitors must wash their hands before entering - the hydroalcoholic solution is available free of charge for this purpose.
  • The direction of the visit is unique. Visitors must follow the indicated route. They enter from Marina Street (Nativity façade) and leave from Sardenya Street (Passion façade) or from the museum (Nativity façade).

For its part, the Sagrada Família makes every effort every day to protect you:

  • System of renewal and treatment of indoor air with specific hygienic products and filters.
  • Daily disinfection and cleaning of surfaces in tourist areas.
  • Elimination of paper brochures, audioguides, and broadcasting devices for groups. Barcelona.com provides with its tickets the downloadable Sagrada Família AudioGuide application, to follow your visit on your own phone.
  • Installation of protective screens at customer service and visitor contact points.

More about Sagrada Familia

Unique in the world: The Sagrada Familia is one of the few monuments in the world that we visit while it is still under construction. Every day works of improvement are undertaken in certain areas of the Basilica. No worries, however, the inconvenience to visitors is very limited and does not detract from the magic of this monument

You are benefactors without knowing it : the construction of the Sagrada Familia, which is due to end in 2026, is financed by its visitors as Gaudi wanted. It is with the prices of the tickets that the construction advances stone by stone. After your visit you will be able to say that you participated in the building of a masterpiece!

Antoni Gaudí, the architect of the Sagrada Família, was a great genius, but he must not have imagined that his monument would attract more than 4.5 million visitors a year (2016). Don't let this discourage you, the visit to this basilica is unforgettable, very well organised and ultimately very fluid... If you take care to organise your stay!

Tickets FAQ - All about your tickets to visit Barcelona

We are totally at your service to help you with any questions you may have before or after purchasing your ticket. Problems receiving your ticket? A question before you buy? We answer you within the day, all year round!

Contact us: ticketing@barcelona.com and specify your name, first name, order number if you have it and remind us your email - the same email as your order - to facilitate the processing of your file.

  • What does a 100% mobile ticket mean?

A 100% mobile ticket simply means that your ticket - which you will receive by email just after your purchase - will be - in its electronic form (PDF) - sufficient to enable you to make your visit with your smartphone or tablet. All you have to do is present it at the checkpoint. A simple scan will allow you to make your visit.

  • Can I print my ticket?

You can of course print your ticket if you don't have a smartphone, a tablet or if you simply prefer this option. Upon receipt of the confirmation email, simply print the PDF of the ticket. Then just present your printed ticket at the checkpoint.

  • What does a 100% skip the line ticket mean?

A 100% skip the line ticket means that the ticket in question allows you to enter the place you want to visit in Barcelona without queuing, for example at the ticket office. All you have to do is present your ticket directly at the entrance. This way, you won't lose any time on your day of discovery.

  • What's included with this ticket?

On this same page or on the ticket reservation page - the services included with the purchase of your ticket are systematically indicated. See the "Included" or “Inclusions” section for details.

  • Why do I have to specify a date when buying a ticket?

When you are asked to specify the date of your visit, it is because the monument or service you have chosen to visit also requests it. Most of the time, this date allows tourist sites to limit the number of visitors and therefore to make the visits more fluid. Please note that if you are not asked to specify the time of your visit, this means that you can arrive at any time to visit the site - while respecting the visiting hours of the site in question.

  • Why do I have to specify a date and time when purchasing a ticket?

Same as before, but here in addition to the date - the monument or service you have chosen to visit - also asks you to specify the time you wish to visit. Once again it is a matter of limiting the number of visitors so that your visit is as pleasant as possible.

  • With a ticket - date and time requested - do I have to arrive at the exact time or can I be a little late for my visit?

On the ticket that you will receive by email after your purchase, it is normally specified how much time - in addition to the scheduled time - you are granted in order not to lose your visit. Please note, for example, that a visit to Parc Güell entitles you to entry 30 minutes after the stated time. The Sagrada Familia ticket indicates a time slot of 15 minutes. It is therefore important to respect this time slot. If the ticket does not specify a time slot, then the timetable must be respected.

  • Why are we talking about combined tickets?

We talk about combined tickets in some of our offers when they offer, for example, two places to visit in Barcelona. The ticket itself is not combined. It is two separate tickets that we combine to make a more economical and attractive offer. You will receive these two tickets by email. As they are separate you can use them according to your preference when the tickets are open or according to the dates and times you choose.

  • How to benefit from a discount for example according to age or for students?

When purchasing your ticket, discounts are always indicated when available. For example, there are regular discounts for children in different age groups, ranging from free for very young children to discounts for seniors over 65 years of age. Discounted tickets for students are indicated in the same way.

Don't forget your proof of discounts - identity card, student card... - to be shown during your visit to Barcelona.

  • What are the means of payment for the tickets?

To pay online your tickets to visit Barcelona, are accepted the classic means of payment used worldwide such as:  Visa, Mastercard, Alipay, iDeal, GiroPay or Paypal.

  • What is the difference between tours and tickets?

The difference between tours and tickets is that both types of tickets allow you to visit the main monuments of the city with a guide who speaks your language for the tours (or guided tours) or by yourself with the tickets. You can find the guided tours and tickets in our section: Barcelona Tours

Hello Donald,
The refund in case of cancellation of the Sagrada Familia fast track ticket is included in the purchase.

However, we offer you 2 options:
> the "48 hours before visiting the Basilica" refund option is automatically included when you purchase the ticket.
> the "additional time to cancel" option allows a refund up to 24 hours before the scheduled date of the visit.
This second option slightly increases the price of the ticket but allows you to be at ease in case of a last-minute hitch.

Enjoy your visit!

The combined Sagrada Família + hop-on hop-off tourist bus ticket sold on this page only offers a one-day Ho-ho bus.
But thanks for the idea. We will see later in the season if it is possible to add this option.
    Regards,

  16. Sagrada + bus 2 days - Ada (28 Jan 2022 - 08:58)

  17. @Susan Santiago - Barcelona.com (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

    Hello Susan Santiago,
It is not known if the Sagrada Familia will be open in May 2022. Normally this would have been the case, since the pandemic, the tickets are put on sale only a few months before the date of visit. So we advise you to come back to this site early next year to buy your ticket.
    Best,

  18. Visiting 1st time. - Susan Santiago (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

I will be in Barcelona for the first time May 20th and was hoping to be able to visit La Sagrada Familia on the 21st. I'd love to purchase a ticket before, but this site says it is closed for the time being due to Covid. If I purchase my tickets and its still closed, would I get a refund? My visit there is for a cruise and after the 21st I will be leaving Barcelona.

  19. @Hadeina - Barcelone.com (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

    Hello Hadeina,
Due to the Coranavirus pandemic the Sagrada Familia is closed to visitors at the moment. No one knows when it will reopen in 2021.
However we will be the first to inform you and put the tickets for sale on this same page.

    Patience and see you soon.

  20. When will the Sagrada Familia reopen? - Hadeina (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

    Hello,
Do you have any idea when the Sagrada Familia will reopen to visitors in 2021?
There is very little information about it..

  21. @PeterW - Barcelona.com (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

I am wondering if the “Skip the line” tickets to Sagrada include the towers?

  25. @Pauline Stewart - Barcelona.com (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

    Hello Pauline Stewart,
We would let you in for sure but we are not the Sagrada Familia entry staff... Better respect age and buy one normal ticket and one reduced.
Have a good anniversary and a great visit of Barcelona!

  26. Over 65 ticket - Pauline Stewart (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

I will be visiting on 5the Sept 2019 and I turn 65 on 5th October 2019, can I purchase the reduced price ticket? My husband is already 65

  27. Children admission - Mike (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

I'de like to know if the admission is free for children under 11 at the moment of the order or at the moment of the visit. I've to prepare our stay in Barcelona now but my son will be 11 when we'll be in Barcelona...

  28. @Mike - Barcelona.com (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

    Hello Mike,
Well tried, but the age of the visitor is understood at the time of the visit and not at the time of the purchase of tickets. In case of an entry check, the age must be respected to benefit from a discount or free admission.
    Have a good visit!

  33. Skip the line ticket is a good idea - sam (10 Jan 2022 - 08:54)

Better book in advance and take a skip the line ticket for the Sagrada, many people, long lines but absolutly perfect with this pass. Best place to visit in Barcelona, or at least the 1rst one;,-
