History and tour of the Sagrada Família
You can visit the exterior and interior of the unfinished work of architect Antoni Gaudí, who worked tirelessly on it until his death in 1926. The work he completed during his lifetime, i.e. the crypt and the façade of the Nativity, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005. The basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI on 7 November 2010.
Key dates in the history of the basilica
The great adventure of the Sagrada Família began in 1882. Two men were responsible for its genesis: Josep María Bocabella y Verdaguer and Antoni Gaudí. All the dates in its history: from the laying of the foundation stone to the laying of the Star of Mary at the end of 2021. A twelve-pointed star that lights up every evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família in Catalan (in English: "Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family") is due to be completed in 2026.

Antonio Gaudí
The brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí was responsible for this masterpiece. At the age of 31, he designed this church, which was disproportionately large for its time, with its five naves, three facades and eighteen towers. He is also the man who defined a new form of religious architecture known as naturalist-modernist. A symbolic creativity for religious architecture that has never been equalled to this day.

Facades and towers
The facades and towers of Barcelona's church can be seen from the outside. But if you want to climb to the top of the Passion Tower or the Nativity Tower, you have to buy the "fast-track ticket + towers". Theoretically, the Basilica will be finished in 2026, the hoped-for date for the completion of the most important works and the centenary of the death of its creator Antoni Gaudí. But the history of the work has been marked by numerous delays. The most recent of these was the Covid-19 pandemic, which did nothing to ease the completion of a project begun in 1882.

When is the best time to visit the Sagrada Família?
The best time to visit the basilica is in the morning, when it opens at 9am. It is one of the most visited monuments in Spain, alongside two of Barcelona's other 'temples': Camp Nou and Park Güell. It is advisable to buy your ticket in advance to avoid wasting time at the entrance. Once inside, the visit always flows smoothly due to the limited number of visitors.

What are the opening times for the Sagrada Família?
The Basilica is open every day of the week from 9am to 6pm.
On 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January, opening hours are from 9am to 2pm.
How long will it take to visit?
It takes around 2 hours to visit it, including the towers, the museum - located next to the crypt - and the shop. Once inside the basilica, you can stay as long as you like!

Is there a waiting line?
Yes, because of its popularity, this monument attracts large numbers of visitors every day. In the high tourist season, the waiting time to buy a ticket at the ticket office can vary between one and two hours, with no guarantee that you will be able to get in if you are in a group, for example. Our advice is to buy your tickets well in advance.

How to avoid queues?
You can avoid queuing by buying your tickets in advance. All tickets on sale on this page are sold for a specific date and time of visit. They guarantee you entry without wasting time.
What are the free tickets to the Sagrada Família?
- Admission is free for under-11s, but at least one adult ticket must be purchased at the same time. A maximum of two children under the age of 11 may enter free of charge with the same accompanying adult.
- Disabled people (over 65%) and their carers are entitled to free admission. Please bring proof of your disability.
- Free Sagrada Família: Everyone can attend the free mass in the Sagrada Família on Sunday mornings. It is held from 9 to 10 a.m. in several languages. It is advisable to arrive by 8 a.m. to try and get a seat.
- To give young people easier access to culture, the Basilica offers half-price admission during certain periods of the year. Admission costs €7 for young people aged between 11 and 30, but is only available at the ticket office on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays between 4pm and 6pm.

By metro
Metro lines 2 and 5 serve the basilica. The metro stop is "Sagrada Família". It is convenient as it is directly opposite the entrance to the basilica for individual visitors on the right and on the left for groups.
By bus
Lines 19, 33, 34, D50, H10 and B24. The bus stops are "Sagrada Família" and "Mallorca - Marina".
By tourist bus - Hop-on Hop-off Bus
The blue line stops in front of the basilica.

It is the same in other languages.
The aim is to make the tour of this monument more fluid (it's more complicated with groups in rather narrow staircases).

Yes, Sagrada Familia tour will be open end of December 22. In fact, you can already buy your ticket for the guided tour in English e.g. the guided tour of the Basilica on 31 December is scheduled at 1:30 pm.
