History and tour of the Sagrada Família

You can visit the exterior and interior of the unfinished work of architect Antoni Gaudí, who worked tirelessly on it until his death in 1926. The work he completed during his lifetime, i.e. the crypt and the façade of the Nativity, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005. The basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI on 7 November 2010.

Key dates in the history of the basilica

The great adventure of the Sagrada Família began in 1882. Two men were responsible for its genesis: Josep María Bocabella y Verdaguer and Antoni Gaudí. All the dates in its history: from the laying of the foundation stone to the laying of the Star of Mary at the end of 2021. A twelve-pointed star that lights up every evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família in Catalan (in English: "Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family") is due to be completed in 2026.

➜ Sagrada Família History

Antonio Gaudí

The brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí was responsible for this masterpiece. At the age of 31, he designed this church, which was disproportionately large for its time, with its five naves, three facades and eighteen towers. He is also the man who defined a new form of religious architecture known as naturalist-modernist. A symbolic creativity for religious architecture that has never been equalled to this day.

What to see inside?

With your entrance ticket, you'll discover a magical place that seems to be shrouded in a divine aura. Height, width, light. Everything is designed to impress. The magic of the stained-glass windows, the apse, the altar and the crypt can only be discovered with contemplation. Finally, the Antoni Gaudí Museum helps you understand his creative process and construction techniques. An unforgettable visit.

Facades and towers

The facades and towers of Barcelona's church can be seen from the outside. But if you want to climb to the top of the Passion Tower or the Nativity Tower, you have to buy the "fast-track ticket + towers". With its three facades and eighteen towers, the exterior is extraordinary in terms of its size and creative genius. Several generations of architects have succeeded one another in bringing Gaudí's work to life, while respecting his original plans. Visitors are simply stunned by this monument to the Glory of God. The height, the richness of the façades, the virtuosity of the sculptures. You could spend hours studying its symbolism or simply admire the technical prowess of its construction.

End of works

Theoretically, the Basilica will be finished in 2026, the hoped-for date for the completion of the most important works and the centenary of the death of its creator Antoni Gaudí. But the history of the work has been marked by numerous delays. The most recent of these was the Covid-19 pandemic, which did nothing to ease the completion of a project begun in 1882.

Hello,
Do we have access to the church towers during the guided tour?
thank you in advance
little information on site
I loved the Sagrada Familia, but I was a little disappointed by the lack of information signs in English. A little more signage would go a long way to helping international visitors understand what they're seeing.
:-)
@sandyCC
Hello sandyCC,
Indeed, the guided tour in English of the Sagrada Família does not include the visit of the towers.
It is the same in other languages.
The aim is to make the tour of this monument more fluid (it's more complicated with groups in rather narrow staircases).
Have a nice visit,
sagrada guided visit with tower or not?

I recently visited the magnificent Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and I was blown away by its beauty. The intricate stone carvings and stained glass windows were truly breathtaking, and the intricate detail in the architecture was unlike anything I had seen before. It was such a unique and awe-inspiring experience that I will never forget. The staff was also incredibly friendly and helpful, making my visit even more enjoyable.
I highly recommend visiting this incredible monument if you ever find yourself in Barcelona - you won't regret it!
