Bar Marsella

Dali, Picasso, Gaud, Heminway... and many others famous artists used to come to the Bar Marsella to have a drink.

Order an absinthe, a very strong french beverage, today forbidden in France, guess why! Open since 1820, probably the very first bar in Barcelona. Today you'll see locals, students, young alternative people and a few nostalgics from the french Mai 68.

Todos a firmar contra el cierre del Marsella: el último bar de la Barcelona auténtica de antes de las Olimpiadas y la posterior invasión de turismo masificado que provocaron.

free and it's well worth a visit.
A fine venue for free photo exhibitions on La Rambla, in a peaceful setting away from the hustle and bustle of this grand avenue. Whether you're a photography enthusiast or an amateur, it's well worth a visit.

simple and cool to visit
As I only had a day to visit, it was a simple and efficient way. Great air-conditioning on the lower floor of the bus. Well-organised and friendly welcome.

for the Gaudi buildings
For the Gaudi buildings but not for the shopping... very nice shops like everywhere else in the world, no interest.

impressed by this brilliant creator
As I learned more about Antoni Gaudí's life while visiting his works, I was deeply impressed by his devotion to architecture and his unique artistic vision. He was a passionate man who devoted his life to creating extraordinary buildings.

Not to be confused - as I was - with the architect Lluís Domènech's Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, now known as Sant Pau Hospital or the Modernist Site of Sant Pau ;-) c

not to miss If you like Gaudi
The architecture of the Palais Güell is very distinctive, with a slightly Gothic atmosphere, but whether you like it or not, the visit is well worth the diversion. I recommend the audioguide (included in the price of admission) which, as well as being very well produced and comprehensive, is essential for understanding the history of the place and imagining the life of its inhabitants. Allow a good hour.

  2. Bar Marsella - jethro (26 Apr 2013 - 08:15)

Visited the Bar Marsella in 2011. What a dump, can't wait to get back there in 2014,
hasn't been decorated since Voltaires last visit. Loved it,exept the owner, I think. American arsehole. Still it's all part of the ambiance. My wife claimed to have wierd dreams all night but I just thought she was pissed like the rest of us. See the bar in Vickie maria Barcelonala. Think that's the right title.
IN BARCELONA IT"S A MUST VISIT.

  7. Barcelona and Absinthe - Ed (14 Jun 2008 - 12:57)

I recently traveled to Barcelona, and as an American one of my objectives was Absinthe. I had a great time at Bar Marsella. The atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for. Hyper rustic, jammed with interesting people, and homemade Absinthe served at every table. My only critique was the effect of the absinthe was nothing different from any other alcohol.

While I was in Barcelona I bought a bottle of a different brand on Las Ramblas. I don't remember the name but it was in a black wine bottle and was expensive ($36). However it did deliver on a totally different effect than regular alcohol. Not sure what they put in that stuff.

  8. GREAT BAR - Ken (19 Jan 2008 - 21:40)

The best bar in Barcelona! Friendly staff and always a fun time....

  9. excellent - andyvain (23 Aug 2007 - 12:49)

Un décor décalé, une ambiance chaude, un service réactif...autant d'atouts qui font de ce bar une excellente destination pour boire une absinthe...

  10. Cool - Little john (31 Jul 2007 - 16:10)

L'ambiance un peu ancienne est superbe, une bonne ambiance où les gens s'amusent et rigolent ! de plus l'absynthe est très bonne, on en abuse meme!!! Allez-y
    par conte il fait chaud!!
    PEACE

  11. crowded with American tourists - courtney love fan (10 Dec 2006 - 01:03)

I was in Bar Marsella on the first Saturday night in December, arriving around midnight. It was extremely crowded but we got lucky and got a table shortly after we arrived. Then it got even more packed! Lots of American frat boys and sorority b's. Absente was an interesting experience but no more than other strong liquor. I'm surprised it is still banned anywhere where vodka is sold.

  12. Drinking absinthe - Brent (19 Aug 2006 - 02:22)

Me and two of my buddies stoped in here for some absinthe. It was a great bar, not too crowded. Everyone was drinking absinthe there and nothing else.
